When Office Depot decided to build a new global corporate headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla., it turned to the same firm it relied on to express its brand at retail: Big Red Rooster.

To design a work environment that inspired creativity and breakthrough thinking, our team developed a concept that captured the artful essence of the brand’s core business – office supplies – using bold oversized graphics to create a sense of scale and impact in the space. From creative concepts to environmental graphics and wayfinding, our team designed the space with the associates and their work styles in mind.

The communication strategy hierarchy supports a range of wayfinding zones that intuitively lead associates through the floor plan. A comprehensive graphic location plan identifies landmark graphic placements, which celebrate the corporate vision and values as well as office supply inventions. Factoids and icons based on common office supplies provide a platform for conference room and common area naming strategies. Stairwells integrate wayfinding with whimsy by alternating directional icons and office supply factoids.

Leveraging the new building’s design concept, we created a communication strategy that kept the staff fully informed and generated excitement about the new space. Complete with paper airplane contests, the team created office supply-themed activities that related to the campus landmark graphics. The communication extended to campus video screens playing office supply factoids and activity invitations on a continuous loop.

The new design generated excitement, inspired creativity and facilitated breakthrough thinking.
